ELC1030 - An excellent and scarce 1796 pattern heavy cavalry trooper's sword (or pallasch), marked to D Troop of the QDG, which I take to indicate the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays). The regimental designation is worn with age, but still very clearly engraved to the front knucklebow of the guard. The blade is with the original hatchet point (possibly because the 2nd DG did not return to the Continent until after Waterloo, where a lot of these swords had been spear-pointed), with dark patina and some patches of pitting, but generally solid and sound. The hilt has matching dark patina to the blade, with most of the leather remaining to the grip and some signs of old wood worm. The grip and backstrap are solid on the tang and there is a little bit of movement to the guard, due to the loss of the leather washer. The blade has a crown acceptance stamp and the maker's name on the spine, which I cannot read clearly, but which may be Runkell. There is no scabbard unfortunately, but this pattern of sword is highly sought-after and quite scarce now in such complete intact condition, especially with the added bonus of the regimental marking. A very desirable and iconic sword.
