EL7212 - A fantastic example of the 1796 pattern light cavalry troopers' sabre, by T, J & I Gill. There is some question over this maker's stamp, as Thomas, James & John Gill were operating from 1802-1806 (is that 'I' supposed to be a 'J'?) and T & J Gill were operating in 1806-1807. An interesting puzzle to unravel there, but this sabre must date to around 1802-1807. Gill, based in London, was a highly respected maker, sometimes regarded as one of the best of the time. The bright and clean blade, 32.5 inches long, has clearly been service sharpened during its service life (though not still really sharp) and carries the crown approval mark of issue. The blade is firm in the hilt, the leather washer intact, and there is no movement. The leather of the grip is mostly intact and in good condition and the hilt and scabbard are smooth with an even patina. This is one of the cleanest and most untouched 1796 troopers' sabres I have had in a long time, and in really good solid condition, with the original scabbard.
