1827 Pattern Prosser-style Royal Navy Officer's Sword
EL7434 - An 1827 pattern Royal Navy officer's sword with Prosser style wide quill pipeback blade. The blade of 31 inches is in good condition and firm in the hilt, with no movement. The blade is in good condition, though a combination of light patina and original faint/light etching mean that the etching is a little difficult to see - it's possibly that this would become clearer with some careful polishing. I can see the word 'Warranted', as well as the Royal coat of arms, but I cannot see a maker named, nor which monarch this sword was made under. My guess would be George IV or William IV, but it could also be from the beginning of Victoria's reign, so we can loosely say c.1827-1840. This is a good wide example, perhaps by Prosser, and the hilt is in excellent condition, with gilt brass fittings, very detailed ferrule and deeply cast fouled anchor on the guard, it exudes quality. The folding drop section looks like it rests quite low when deployed, but I think that is intentional, and the hinge and spring work perfectly well and hold it in the open or closed position. The white shagreen grip and wire are in excellent complete and clean condition. Sadly the original leather and brass scabbard is not present.
