Product Details

EL6846 - A Spanish cup-hilted broadsword, probably for heavy cavalry, circa 1700-1750. The blade measuring 37.5 inches from the tip to the crossguard inside the bowl, or just over 35 inches to the top of the cup-hilt. The broadsword blade with some light pitting, but in good condition generally and clearing bearing the Spanish motif of "Don't draw me without reason - Don't sheath me without honour" on each side. The plain steel cup-hilt with a rolled edge and one small area where rust has created a hole near the edge (see photos). Long steel quillons and knucklebow, with wire-bound rectangular grip (which has a little bit of movement on the tang, despite the rest of the hilt being firm), with small pommel. An attractive and nice handling sword, rarer than the typical Napoleonic era heavy cavalry swords, or typical 18th century Bilbao broadswords. French to market from an old collection.
