Product Details

ELC1013 - A Wilkinson 'Medium Infantry Pattern Sword' dating to 1866 and etched with the regiment and initials of William McNeile Cairns. The spine of the blade carrying serial number 14445, this sword was made for William McNeile Cairns of the 43rd Regiment of Foot, who had purchased his commission as 2nd Lieutenant in March 1863 and was promoted Lieutenant in May 1864. He served in the New Zealand Land/Maori Wars with the 43rd, receiving his promotion to Captain on 21st September 1872. Given that this sword was made in 1866, it is likely that Cairns purchased the sword after returning from New Zealand.

The sword is in reasonable condition overall, but does have some wear and tear, having various deformations to the brass hilt. The scabbard is quite dented near the drag. The blade is in good condition, but with a grey patina to the surface (which could probably be improved with some cleaning). The hilt is firm on the hilt and the shagreen is good - there are a couple of loops of the thinner grip wire missing near the pommel end. In general though, it is in quite good condition and would benefit from some careful cleaning/restoration.
