Product Details

EL7308 - A mid-17th century (probably French) transitional rapier (probably composite). Featuring a narrow double-edged blade measuring 36 inches from tip to the top of the grip, carrying engraved attribution alluding to/implying a Toledo maker, which I believe to be a period marketing gimmick (the blade was probably German made). A perforated and elaborate dish guard in steel, having faces in plaques to both sides, and also fleur de lis emblems which might indicate this being a French piece. To my eyes the quillons/guard and pommel don't necessarily match, and were probably put together when the grip was restored (probably in the 19th century), therefore this is being openly sold as a 'composite'. The spiral wire-bound grip is in very good condition, but is probably a 19th or early 20th century restoration. The hilt construction firm on the tang with no notable movement.
