Attributed 3rd London Rifle Volunteers Sword by Pillin
EL7457 - A piquet weight Victorian 1845 pattern officer's sword by Pillin, etched to the 3rd London Rifle Volunteers, and carrying the officer's initials and crest. The initials are (I think) AGOK and the crest and motto (avise la fin) relate to the Scottish Kennedy family, and the sword has been attributed to Scottish peer Archibald Kennedy, 3rd Marquess of Ailsa, but I am not certain of this attribution. There is some research to do! The sword itself is in quite good condition, with the blade mostly in bright polish, with good etching, and some areas of patina and a few spots of pitting. The hilt is in good condition, with a lot of the original gilding remaining, and very good shagreen and grip wire. Most of the patent leather guard liner remains, but is loose. The hilt is firm on the tang, but there is a tiny bit of movement in the guard. Complete in the original scabbard, which could do with a clean up. An interesting and good quality sword with lots of research potential.
