Boer War 1890 Pattern Cavalry Sword of the 5th Dragoon Guards
EL7450 - An 1890 pattern cavalry sword, made in 1891 at the Enfield Small Arms Factory, subsequently repaired or altered in Birmingham (presumably by Mole), issued at some point to the 5th Dragoon Guards, and later the Yeomanry Cavalry (probably when the 5th Dragoon Guards got the newer 1899 pattern). There are copious other stamps and markings, and it would be a fun bit of research trying to map out the life of this cavalry sword. It is quite likely that the sword went with the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Dragoon Guards to South Africa to fight in the Second Anglo-Boer War, and the blade has been service sharpened. In Yeomanry Cavalry service it is also possible that this sword went to WW1. Condition overall is very good to excellent, with lots of clear stamps, bright metalwork and very good leather grip plates, everything secure with no movement. The scabbard is also in good condition and fits like a glove, though note that its earliest date is 1887, so was originally for an 1885 pattern sword, but it contains later dates, so was presumably matched to this sword around 1900 or earlier.
