EL6208 - A lovely and great quality mid-Victorian light cavalry officer's sword by the famous Charles Reeves of Birmingham. The majority of swords that Reeves (of the Patent Solid Hilt fame) built were for sale by other companies. Reeves were the biggest producer of swords for the Board of Ordnance/War Department before Mole took over. Reeves' officer's swords are not common and are always of top notch quality. This sword is in good condition, with a bright blade, clear detailed etching, most of the plating remaining to the hilt, the shagreen and grip wire in good condition and everything is firm and tight between blade and hilt. The blade has been service sharpened and retains a fairly fine edge that would be easy to polish back to cutting sharp. A real added boon with this sword is the potential to identify the original owner, because the officer has had his three initials engraved on the backstrap. It comes complete in a matching field service scabbard of a slightly later date (perhaps 1870s or 1880s) than the sword, suggesting the officer either served for quite a while, or passed the sword onto someone else. Feels great in the hand, a real nice sword.
