EL7230 - A scarce early pre-numbered Wilkinson 1845 pattern infantry officer's sword by Wilkinson. Being pre-numbered, this sword definitely dates to between 1845 and 1854, but due to the earlier style of etching, with the Wilkinson name on the base of the fuller rather than the ricasso, I believe dates this example to 1845-1850. The blade in very good condition, with most of the original polish remaining, with some staining towards the tip. The blade firm in the hilt with no movement. The brass of the hilt and scabbard with aged patina, which I have left in sleepy condition, but would polish up easily if desired. The brass is in good shape and the folding drop section works very well and is tight. No movement in the hilt and the shagreen and grip wire are in very good condition. The edge has probably been service sharpened, but it is difficult to be certain in this case. The brass scabbard probably indicates Field Rank (Major or higher), and has numerous dents, usually associated with at least a few years of wearing, so this sword was likely in use in the 1850s and 1860s, possibly longer.
