European Walloon Backsword made in Solingen
EL6926 - A Continental European officer's Walloon style backsword, circa 1680-1720. Featuring an impressive and broad 31.5 inch backsword blade, with triple fullers, featuring the engraved 'me fecit Solingen' repeated motif to both sides. The triple fullers transition to double fullers, with the foible of the blade being double-edged, finishing in a spear point. Given the length, this was probably for an infantry officer, but could potentially also have been for a cavalry officer. The brass hilt is in good shape and firm on the tang, with double-shell, single knucklebow and connecting branches, finishing in a brass ball-pommel. The wooden grip is original, with historical woodworm evident, and the original wire wrap is almost entirely gone, leaving just the Turk's heads. This however gives a solid clue that the original wire wrap was brass/copper, and it would be well worth restoring this. A nicely handling sword with a great blade.
