Excellent 1827 Pattern Royal Navy Sword by Prosser
EL7050 - A magnificent 1827 pattern Royal Navy officer's sword by Prosser, dating to 1827-1837. Due to the reference to the King (either George IV or William IV) on the etching, we know this is pre-1837. Prosser were one of the top makers of the day, and it really shows on this beautiful sword, featuring a 30 inch pipe-back blade of substantial proportions, and having a large yelman (false edge). The etching is deep and crisp and the blade is very clean and bright for the age. The hilt is in equally good condition and unusually features a fixed inner guard section, regarding as a better fighting option (later offered as an option by Wilkinson), and a dark ray skin grip, which might indicate a Master at Arms. The assembly of blade and hilt is all tight, and the original sword knot remains. Sadly there is no scabbard (reflected in the price), but it is otherwise an absolutely top example of a Royal Navy sword of the time. This sword feels wonderful in the hand, looking massive, but feeling like a feather.
