French Light Cavalry Officer's Sword with canular blade
EL6463 - An unusual French light cavalry officer's sword, featuring the standard hilt pattern of M1822 (for light cavalry officers) and a version of the popular canular thrusting blade design, which became regulation for infantry officer's swords in 1882, but here in larger size, at a formidable 37 inches long! Given the pattern of hilt and the length of the blade, it seems to me that this is probably for a light cavalry officer, perhaps one serving in North Africa or elsewhere in the French colonies, however that is not certain and extra research might yield more information on this interesting combination. The hilt, with horn grip, is in good condition and quite firm on the tang. The blade is dark with patina and has some pitting. No scabbard.
