EL7065 - A Continental (probably German) 'feldegen' military sabre, dating to circa 1680-1720. Featuring a 29 inch sabre blade, bearing various emblems and motifs of religious and mystical significance. Various Latin mottos, including "Vincere aut mori" (Conquer or die!). The blackened iron hilt, with perforated side shells, thumb-ring and side bars, of quite a typical German form for the late-17th and early-18th century, used by all kinds of military officers, both mounted and on foot. Given the length, I suspect that this was for an infantry officer. The grip is fluted wood with fine brass wire wrap, and Turk's heads at top and bottom - it is difficult to say whether this is original to the sword, but it certainly appears old and of the correct type, so it is either original or later 18th century in my view. The hilt is all quite firm on the tang, with no really notable movement. Overall in good condition, and a very attractive alternative to the usual straight type of feldegen.
