Late-Victorian 1897 Pattern Royal Engineer's Sword with Officer's Initials by Pillin
EL7449 - A late-Victorian Royal Engineer's officer's sword by S. J. Pillin, with the officer's initials etched on the blade. It is clear that this sword had the hilt updated to the 1897 pattern around 1900, and it was presumably mounted with the brass 1857 pattern hilt prior to that, but the blade is of the 1892 pattern, so much post-date 1892. Both blade and hilt carry the Victorian cypher. The blade is in bright polish with good etching, including the officer's initials (unresearched, but the officer must have been serving after 1892 and before 1897, and probably for years after that). The hilt does have some movement on the tang. The hilt is in generally good condition, with some blemishes to the plated guard and back piece, with a good grip showing a bit of wear.
