EL7397 - A late-Victorian Royal Engineers officer's sword, featuring an 1845 pattern blade, updated with the 1897 pattern hilt. This would have originally been mounted with the 1857 pattern brass scroll hilt of the Royal Engineers for an officer in the service before 1892, and then that officer updated their hilt to the new regulation before 1901 (when Queen Victoria died). Sadly we will never know who the officer was, but they must have been in the Royal Engineers before 1892 and until after 1901. The blade carries no maker or retailer, and the proof slug is a quite common type, but from the etching style of the blade I suspect that this is Germany (Solingen) made. The blade has been service sharpened and is bright and clean, with really deep and detailed etching, quite unusual in style. It is firm in the hilt. The hilt is in good condition, with a bright plated guard and good shagreen. Complete in steel dress scabbard.
