Late-Victorian Royal Engineers Officer's Sword with Initials by Pillin
EL6935 - A good late-Victorian Royal Engineers' officer's sword by Pillin, with initials. Pillin were a top quality maker and this shows on the splendid deep and intricate blade etching, which incorporates the Royal Engineers name and emblem, and the officer's initials. The numbered blade has been service sharpened, so there is lots of research potential with this lovely sword. This blade would originally have had the gilt scroll hilt (1857 pattern) but was presumably updated to the 1897 pattern hilt between 1897 and 1901. There is a little bit of movement in the guard, but the nut looks like it could be tightened - I have left it as is. Complete in an Indian Army style field service scabbard which probably dates earlier, being the same age as the blade (slightly earlier than the hilt). This should be a fun research project which stands a very high chance of matching to a Royal Engineers officer circa 1885-1900.
