Product Details

EL6942 - A great example of the 1845 pattern infantry officer's sword by Wilkinson (numbered 11043 for 1861), featuring an engraved gift dedication to the guard. This sword was given by Colonel Daniell (formerly of the Coldstream Guards) to then-young officer Henry Whyte. See the attached research which I have dug up, but surely there is lots more to do. Whyte served in the 14th Madras Infantry - Commissioned in Jan 1861. Promoted Lieutenant in Apr 1864. Promoted to Captain in 1873 (thereafter retiring). Married in Ireland in October 1871 to Charlotte Hamilton. Daughter born in 1873. He died in Madras from a short illness on 5 November 1876. The sword itself is in very good condition, with a bright blade, deep etching in good condition, the blade firm in the hilt with no movement. The hilt is in equally good condition, the shagreen and grip wire very good. Complete with original scabbard and sword knot.
