Named Victorian Royal Artillery Sword by Thurkle with Initials and Crest
EL7185 - A Victorian Royal Artillery officer's sword by Edward Thurkle. Service sharpened for campaign and carrying the officer's initials HGB and crest - this seems to be Herbert George Brett. Brett served on the North West Frontier under Sir William Lockhart in 1897-98 with No. 2 Derajat Mountain Battery, with the Kohat-Kurram Field Force, including the relief of the Samana Forts, and with the Tirah Expeditionary Force, including the capture of the Simpagha and Arnanga Passes, and in the operations in the Maidan and Bazar Valleys, including the engagement at Kahu Pass. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and also served in Egypt and Flanders during WW1, retiring in 1922. The blade is quite bright but would benefit from a light clean up, and inevitably the service sharpening has obscured/removed some of the etching. The hilt is in good condition and with bright nickel plating. The nut at the end of the tang has been tampered with at some point, but this does not look recent and everything seems tight. Complete in bright plated scabbard.
