Product Details

EL7388 - The Royal Artillery officer's sword, made by Wilkinson, numbered 12913 (mounted 21st December 1863) for R. Muir Esq. The identity of this R. Muir is a mystery - I have searched in the all the Army Lists and not been able to find an officer with this name in the Royal Artillery. To add to the enigma, the person's initials "R. M." have been engraved on the back piece of the grip. I can only find one R. Muir associated with the Royal Artillery, who was a gunner (not officer) during the Crimean War, who served at Alma. To add to this mystery, the sword has been well service sharpened and the initials on the back piece have clearly been done after the sword was made, as they normally etched such things on the blade. An interesting research puzzle therefore! The sword itself is in lovely condition, with a very clean 34.5 inch blade and excellent condition hilt, a great grip and everything tight and solid. Unfortunately there is no scabbard.
