Named Wilkinson Madras Light Infantry Officer's Sword
EL7009 - A scarce Madras Light Infantry officer's 1845 pattern sword by Wilkinson (numbered 15789 for 1868), recorded as being sold to Henry William Aylmer Willins (1838–1919). Willins commissioned in 1858, serving in the 105th Regiment of Foot (Madras Infantry) and in August 1868 is recorded as boarding the ship Essex, at Gravesend, to return to India. This sword was purchased by him from Wilkinson in the month prior, so he much have chosen to replace an earlier sword and this is a top quality choice. In good untouched condition, with a bright and clean blade, very good crisp etching, the regulation 32.5 inch blade firm in the hilt. The hilt is also untouched, with original patina to the brass guard and back piece, all the grip wire intact, and just minimal wear to the shagreen. Complete in original scabbard with Wilkinson's name to the throat. A lovely example, with lots of research potential.
