Named mid-Victorian Wilkinson Royal Artillery Sword
EL7179 - The Wilkinson Royal Artillery sword (numbered 11981 for 1862) of Major Wadham Pigott Platt. Platt was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1862, promoted to Captain in 1875 and Major in 1882. By 1884 he was on the retired list of officers. The sword is service sharpened and this corresponds to the fact that Platt had served on the Hazara Campaign in 1868 (receiving the medal and clasps), now generally known as the Second Black Mountain Expedition, on the North-West Frontier of India. Platt went on to marry, retire and have children. The sword is in good condition, with a bright crisp blade, with good etching and polish. The hilt is also in good condition and firm on the tang with no movement, though there are a couple of little patches where the shagreen has worn away. Complete in matching scabbard and it sheathes well.
