Napoleonic French Officer's Blue & Gilt Bladed Sabre by Schimelbusch
EL6981 - A good Napoleonic French officer's sabre, featuring a 34 inch blued and gilded blade, by Johan Schimelbusch & Co. of Solingen . The hilt is of the regulation infantry officer's form, with melon-headed pommel, but unusually in iron instead of brass. Finely made, and in good condition, with a checkered dark wood grip. The iron hilt and long blade probably indicates either a mounted (senior) infantry officer, or perhaps a non-regulation choice by a cavalry or dragoons officer. The blade with a good amount of blue left, with some patina over the top, and the second half of the blade bright with much original polish remaining. The hilt is generally firm on the hilt, but there is a tiny bit of lateral movement in the wooden grip. A lovely sword and rather rare, requiring further research - I have not been able to find another like it on record. Feels great in the hand. No scabbard.
