Product Details

EL7424 - A scarce 1816 pattern Rifleman's sidearm, by Osborn & Gunby, circa 1816-1820. These for many years were identified as pioneers' sidearms, due to their superficial similarity to later Victorian pioneers' swords, but more recent research has proven them to be the 1816 pattern Rifleman's sidearm. Featuring a 22 inch falchion-like blade, with flared end, and serrated saw section on the back. This example has been repeatedly service sharpened and features and approval/issue stamp. The blade is bright and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt features a 1796 light cavalry style knucklebow and ribbed grip, finished with a lion head pommel. There is only the very tiniest bit of movement in the hilt perceivable. A rare piece and the best example I have had, by one of the best sword makers of the day.
