EL7099 - A good 4th Cheshire Rifle Volunteers 1845 pattern infantry officer's sword by Pillin, with initials. It is somewhat unusual to find brass-hilted 1845 patterns named to Rifle Volunteers, but some Volunteer officers did indeed keep uniforms more in line with the Militia infantry rather than the typical Rifles. This is a top quality example made by Pillin, probably in the 1870s or 1880s. The blade is in excellent condition and original polish, with crisp etching, and what I presume are the officer's initials are included above the regimental designation. I have not researched these. The hilt is in very good condition, firm on the tang with no movement, the guard being in good shape and the grip shagreen and wire very good. Complete in nickel plated scabbard (which could be polished up - I have left it).
