Product Details

EL7349 - A scarce and desirable Bengal Engineers officer's sword, retailed by Cater of Pall Mall. Dating on this is tricky, as it doesn't carry the EIC emblem and is therefore likely to be post-1858, but the placement of the Cater name is what we usually find on pre-1855 swords. So I believe that this was probably made just after the Indian Mutiny, but note that the blade had been service sharpened, so it has probably been on campaign somewhere, probably in the late 1850s or 1860s. The 32 inch blade is in good condition, with crisp and very good quality etching, with light patina. It is firm in the hilt with no movement, though if you grip it tight and really try to move the guard, there is the tiniest bit of movement. The hilt is in good condition, with the brass scroll guard and very good shagreen and grip wire. There is still gilding remaining in the recesses of the brass hilt. The scabbard is NOT original to this sword, but as I keep some spare scabbards (which were custom made to each sword and therefore rarely fit another sword) and this is the correct period and fits this sword fairly well, I have included it.
