Scarce Early Wilkinson Infantry Officer's Sword with Crest & Motto
EL7110 - A scarce early pre-numbered Wilkinson 1845 pattern infantry officer's sword, with crest and motto. Wilkinson started making these swords in 1845 and numbering them in 1854, but the style of the manufacturer etching puts this sword at the earlier end of that range, from circa 1845-1850. The crest and motto are unresearched, but the blade seems to have been service sharpened and the brass scabbard probably indicates an officer who was Field Rank (Major or above). The blade is bright and clean, in good polish and with crisp etching. The hilt is in generally good condition, though the guard is a bit dented, and there is some movement in the hilt on the tang. The brass scabbard has clearly been worn a lot and carries the dents from walking and riding to show that - if it is possible to identify the officer then there should be some good research potential at a very interesting period for the British Army.
