Scarce 'Flat Solid' Un-Fullered 1846 Pattern Royal Navy Sword
EL7420 - A scarce 'flat solid' (un-fullered) blade 1846 pattern Royal Navy officer's sword, made by Thurkle and retailed by Walton of Gosport (after 1852). As this carries Thurkle's earlier star stamp rather than the later T, this sword probably dates to the 1850s or 1860s, and it has been service sharpened for the last 10 inches on both edges of the foible. The blade is quite robust for a flat solid and is firm in the hilt with no movement. The hilt is somewhat dirty, but in basically good condition, with all the shagreen and wire, and the folding drop works well and stays in place. The remnants of the original sword knot are in place still, though somewhat perished. The scabbard, though complete, is a bit rough, having lost the stitching on the back for about 12 inches and is very dried out and stiff, and the end chape is no longer glued in place. Overall a really nice and good quality fighting sword which needs some attention, mostly cleaning and some light restoration, but with a fantastic and desirable blade. It was presumably taken on active service around the 1860s (China?), or perhaps even earlier around the Crimea/Mutiny period.
