Scarce Named Sword of Lieutenant-Colonel of the Robin Hood Rifles
EL6962 - Officers' swords marked to the Robin Hood Rifles are scarce enough, but this one carries the name of Herbert Walker, who served for 37 years in the regiment and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (see here: http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/books/biographies19... ). Quoting from this website: "son of George Frederick Walker, architect; born at Nottingham, December 22nd, 1846; educated at Willoughby House School; Fellow Royal Institute British Architects; Associate Member Institute of Civil Engineers; Fellow of Surveyors' Institution. Past President Nottingham Architectural Society; member of the Robin Hood Rifles for thirty-seven years, and has been through all the grades from private to Lieutenant-Colonel, which rank he now holds; is President and Treasurer of the Shooting Committee and Prize Fund, and was presented with the Volunteer Decoration in September, 1894." There is surely more research to do. The sword itself is in quite good condition, with usual signs of age and wear. Everything is tight, no movement. Some loss to some of the plating on the hilt and scabbard, but it would all benefit from a careful clean up. The proof disc shows this was made by Thurkle, probably in the 1860s.
