Product Details

EL7049 - A Napoleonic era 1796 pattern light cavalry officer's sabre by J. J. Runkel, with scarce square langets. Runkel was based in England, but getting his swords made by associates in Solingen, and he was probably the biggest importer of swords during this period, and one of the biggest sellers of swords in Britain. This example features a leather-covered ribbed wooden grip (with signs of old woodworm, which would be best filled), with wire wrap intact. The most notable feature of the hilt however are the square langets, which are quite scarce to find. The blade and hilt have dark patina, probably from being displayed on a wall for decades or longer, but have a smooth surface with no serious pitting to mention, so the whole sword could probably be brightened up with careful restoration. The leather washer is missing from under the shoulders of the blade, but despite this the hilt is nice and firm on the tang with no notable movement. There is a big of an impression in the cutting edge near the centre of percussion, but this could be easily polished out. No scabbard.
