Product Details

EL7153 - A good mid-Victorian swordsmanship prize sword retailed by Hawkes of London. Etched on the blade "Awarded to W. Moxon by the officers of the A Troop Yorkshire Princess of Wales' Own Hussars for proficiency of swordsmanship 1875". The Yorkshire Hussars are an interesting regiment with lots to research, but I will leave the identification of W. Moxon to the purchaser. I believe that in 1875 the A Troop was based in/near Leeds. The sword blade is in very good condition, bright and clean, with deep and crisp etching, firm in the hilt. The hilt is in generally good condition, but with some areas of pitting to the guard and back piece. The grip is in very good condition. The scabbard has been cleaned bright, but was obviously rusty at some point in its history and has pitting from that.
