Product Details

EL6984 - A superb and very rare Georgian hunting sword by top sword maker Prosser. Prosser's name prominently etched on both sides of the blade, "maker to the King", this identifies the sword as late Georgian, probably c.1790-1820. This is a type of hunting sword widely used on the Continent in boar and deer hunts, but seldom manufactured in England. The 20 inch blade is etched with various elaborate motifs, and includes a boar crest. At first sight this could be taken to refer to boar hunting, but the fact that it is presented as a family crest makes me think that it might be attributable to a family with some research. The grip seems to be antler, bound with brass wire, the hilt fittings are brass with traces of gilding. The blade has not been sharpened and apart from being 200 years old is nearly like new. The leather scabbard is in equally good condition for the age, with traces of gilding remaining to the brass mounts. The hilt is firm on the tang, with only the very tiniest bit of movement in the guard only.
