Unusual Georgian/Napoleonic Officer's Fighting Sabre
EL7144 - A highly unusual Georgian/Napoleonic officer's sabre. Featuring a broad curved 28 inch blade of 1796 light cavalry style, which has been well sharpened and has a few small nicks in the edge. The hilt comprises a bronze knucklebow with scrolling sidebars, incorporating a ring motif. I don't know what this signifies and I did inspect it to see if something like an anchor emblem had once been attached, but I cannot see any sign of anything missing or having been lost/removed. The grip has a slightly French look to me. I believe this is a British sword, but it is possible that it is Continental with a British style blade. Given the length of the blade, it was likely for either an infantry/artillery or naval officer, or perhaps retailed for an officer who wanted a fighting sword to replace their regulation spadroon. The plain undecorated blade does point to this being a fighting sword, and it certainly feels like it in the hand, being light but with a lot of authority, and well sharpened. A lovely Georgian/Napoleonic sword with research potential.
