Product Details

EL6973 - An intriguing light weight Wilkinson cavalry officer's sword, numbered 14390 for 1866, with the officer's crest and motto, and what appears to be the remains of a dedication etched on the blade. I am uncertain whether this is technically a 'piquet' weight sword or not - it does not have the usual defined ricasso and is seems to have been service sharpened. It is also housed in a late-Victorian field service scabbard. The hilt is full sized and the blade measures 32.5 inches long, so I think rather than a piquet weight sword, this officer perhaps just wanted a lighter and more thrusting sword. I have not researched the Wilkinson records for this sword, so there is plenty of research potential with that crest and the dedication. The hilt is firm on the tang. Condition is average, with an area of pitting in the middle of the blade - see photos. The hilt could be later than the blade, given the fully checkered back piece, but it does not quite look as developed as the 1895 pattern back piece to me. Lots to investigate!
