Unusual Napoleonic Spanish Cavalry Sword with Cuirassier Blade
EL7016 - A Napoleonic era Spanish 'Bilbao' type heavy cavalry sword, featuring what seems to be a French cuirassier blade. The cuirassier blade has been shortened to 32 inches and re-pointed. I cannot see any French markings, but the proportions match contemporary French cuirassier swords, and I feel confident that this is the origin of the blade. The hilt is a well-crafted quality version of the Spanish heavy cavalry hilt, in use since the earlier 1700s. The pommel is attractively faceted, rather than the usual round type, and the detailing on the knucklebow and quillons is well executed. There is a tiny bit of movement in the pommel and grip, but the rest of the hilt is firm on the tang. Dark patina overall. This sword is quite hefty and imposing in the hand, and it seems bigger than it actually is.
