Victorian 1897 Pattern Sword with named Boer War and WW1 History
EL7093 - Victorian 1897 pattern infantry officer's sword, attributed to a Boer War and WW1 veteran, made by Thurkle. Thurkle were one of the top makers of the day, and this sword was made between 1897-1901, carrying Victoria's cypher to both blade and hilt. The blade carries the etched initials CBO and we know from the engraving on the underside of the guard that this was C. B. Oldfield, who served with the Middlesex Regiment in the 2nd Anglo-Boer War and then with the Devonshire Regiment in WW1, so there is plenty of research to get stuck into. The blade is in good condition, except that the tip has been slightly rounded off (this could be reinstated quite easily with a little careful work). The blade is firm in the hilt. The hilt would benefit from a clean up and the nickel-plated guard re-polished. Complete in flexible leather field service scabbard, with plated chape and locket.
