Product Details

EL7200 - A curious Victorian sabre, consisting of a police style hilt, or Handkerchief Cutter 'feats of arms' sword hilt, mounted to a narrow and thick Indian tulwar blade, which carries an Indian inscription to the spine. I believe that this was put together for Victorian 'feats of arms' - cutting various targets as a test of skill and for display. The blade is just under 29 inches long and I thought might be wootz, but a gentle test etch has not confirmed that, so I am not claiming it is wootz. There is an Indian inscription on the spine of the blade, which I have not attempted to get translated. The blade is firm in the hilt. The hilt at first sight looks like a British police hanger hilt, but in fact this hilt seems even more similar to the Handkerchief Cutter swords that companies like Wilkinson were producing for sword feats, having a straighter grip than we normally find on the police swords. A very interesting little sword, worthy of further research.
